Being Thankful

I have been so struck this past week how often the Bible exhorts us to be thankful. It seems like every time I turn around the Lord is prompting us to give thanks to Him. For example,

¹⁹Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, ²⁰always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19-20)

In this passage, Paul is saying that we should always give thanks. Taken literally, always means, well always. That's a lot of times that we are supposed to be thankful. And then he also says to be thankful for everything. Well, it would have been easier if he had said "most things" or "some things". Everything doesn't give us very much wiggle room.

So I'm being personally challenged to apply this in my life, always and in everything. How about you. Are your words, actions, attitudes ones that reflect a thankful heart?

Many years ago our church hosted a five minute radio show on a local radio station with our Senior Pastor, Pastor Mike Cavanaugh, giving a short teaching.

One day while our driving with my family, Pastor Mike came on the radio and shared the below comparison. It impacted and challenged me so much that I wrote it out and for many years kept it posted on the wall in my office.

I read Galatians 5:22-23 this morning, and this little teaching came back to my mind. I thought you might find it meaningful as well.

My Ten Confessions

In the mid-90's our youth pastor at the time, Bill Buckley, shared during a Sunday morning message that he read ten "confessions" to himself each day. I decided to adopt a similar habit, so I printed out and laminated my "Ten Confessions" and kept them in a place where I would see them everyday (in my bathroom). Throughout the years I will re-adopt this practice for different seasons of my life. I thought perhaps you may want to consider doing something similar in your life. Here they are:

My Ten Confessions

Today I submit to God and Resist the devil.
“Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

Today I choose to humble myself in the presence of the Lord.
“God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

Today I am complete in Christ, having everything I need to be a success in every way.
“In Him you have been made complete” Colossians 2:10

Today I have an overcoming spirit and I will not be ruled by fear, doubt, or self-pity.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7

Today whatever I do I will do with all of my heart, for the Lord, not people.
“Whatever you do, do with all of your heart, as for the Lord rather than men.” Colossians 3:23

Today I am free from condemnation and I will not condemn, be critical of or judge myself or another.

The Rich Young Man - Part 2

¹⁶Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

¹⁷"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."¹⁸"Which ones?" the man inquired. Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,
¹⁹honor your father and mother,' and 'love your neighbor as yourself.'"
²⁰"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"
²¹Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
²²When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

This young man seemed so intent on following after Jesus. It seems that if he approached you or I at any point in time the way he did Jesus, we would have been falling all over ourselves getting him plugged into leadership and the church. And yet, he leaves Jesus dejected because his heart wasn't really into what Jesus heart was into. He was a man who wanted the formula for eternal life. What he got instead was an invitation to a lifestyle and relationship. That was just too much for him, which is why he left the conversation so sad.

I'm amazed how easy it is for us to get caught up in doing things right, and end up missing out on the whole point of Jesus tenure on earth. Restored relationship with God.

The Rich Young Man

As we have been going through this special series, I've been amazed to see how many stories and illustrations there are in Scripture which mirror the theme of this parable. This week I read the story of the rich young man who approached Jesus. He asked "what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" He wanted to purchase forgiveness and salvation by doing something.

Check out Jesus response: "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only One who is good."

Wow. In two short statements Jesus has helped us really understand that the word "good" when it comes to eternal life has a much higher standard than any of us would ever think to give it. Who could measure up to a standard that only One could attain? Certainly not you and I!

A Prodigal Difference

In the story of the prodigal son, told by Jesus in Luke 15, the older brother spit out these words to his father: "Look! All these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders."

This week I found myself reading these words which sound very similar to this older brother, but with one big difference: "For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not done evil by turning from my God. All his laws are before me; I have not turned away from his decrees. I have been blameless before him and have kept myself from sin." Psalm 18:21-23

David was saying that he had kept the law and obeyed the father, similar to the elder brother. Yet, if you study the two passages, side by side, you will notice a difference in the attitude, tone of voice, and overall approach to God. The elder brother felt entitled, and was listing off his credentials to God. In fact, he opens the sentence with "Look!" That reminds me of Martha's response to Jesus (see earlier blog) when she told Jesus what to do.

David was simply expressing a truth, that was the result of a humble and intimate relationship with God. Just four verses later he says, "You save the humble but bring low those whose eyes are haughty. You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light." Psalm 18:27-28

Prodigal God: Mary & Martha

In my "Prodigal God" musings this week it dawned on my that there are some very unique similarities between the parable of the prodigal son told by Jesus in Matthew and what happened at the home of Martha & Mary in Luke 10:38-42. I realized Martha was having an "Elder Brother" moment. Jesus rebuked her and really captured the heart of "The Prodigal God" with one simple statement: "only one thing is needed".

Let's make a commitment today to emulate Mary in our walk with God.

Luke 10:38-42
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"

"Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her."

Prodigal God: Provoked.

Beginning this past Sunday we began our "Prodigal God" series here at EGC. I know this is going to be a very provoking series, where we will be forced to question our relationship with God, how we think about Christianity, how we view ourselves, and a lot more. I know it's in the heart of God that we not allow ourselves to become jaded with Him, over-comfortable in our relationship with Him or content to stay where we are spiritually. So I hope you join with the rest of us on this new journey. For many of us, it will be a stretch - but for those of us who open our hearts to God's Holy Spirit, it will be life changing.

Let's be "provoked" together!

In Love with Jesus

It’s amazing to me that God’s number one command to all of us is to love Him – and not to just love Him, but to love Him with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our strength (Deuteronomy 6:5). His desire is that we are overwhelmingly passionate about and in love with Him.

But He obviously also understands that there is no way He could MAKE us love Him. If He did, the love wouldn’t originate from us, but from Him. By giving us the freedom to choose Him or not, He intentionally gave up control over us in this area. My freedom means that there’s something God can’t do – make me love Him. And yet, He commands us to do so.

The revelation that He desires our love more than anything else is dumbfounding. God desires a deep friendship and relationship with me. It’s more important to Him than anything else I could ever do on this earth. He’d rather I love Him than do things for Him, obey Him, or try hard to be a good person. And of course, His desire for me has already been reciprocated in a way that I could never match. He sent His Son to earth, then Jesus lived an amazing life and said many words which instruct me in daily living, and then Christ died on a cross, taking all of my wrongdoings, sin, mistakes, and selfish acts, upon Himself.

I feel like the Lord is asking me today, do you love me? So I thought I’d share the question with you as well. Together, let’s ask ourselves if we love God as much as we should – or if we have let our daily lot in life distract us from the most important thing.

John Piper, in his book God is the Gospel says it this way:
The critical question for our generation - and for every generation - is this: If you could have heaven, with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or any natural disasters, could you be satisfied with heaven, if Christ was not there?

Thoughts on Poverty - by Mother Theresa

If you haven't guessed it yet, I'll let you know now. I've been reading a little book called "Mother Theresa: Her Essential Wisdom" every once in a while. It's a small book of quotes by her. In case you haven't read my earlier post about her, let me give you a quick history lesson: Mother Theresa chose to live in poverty so that she could best love and serve the poor. As a result of her commitment and sacrifice, at the time of her death there were over 610 missions in 123 countries operating, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counseling programs, orphanages, and schools. She won the Nobel Peace Prize among many others, and in 1996 was proclaimed by the United States as an Honorary Citizen of the United States. To read more about her life, click here.

I won't comment on the below two quotes - but to let you know I found them thought provoking...

"Poverty makes us free. We need to experience the joy of poverty. We choose poverty; we choose not to have things. Unlike the poorest of the poor who are forced to be poor, if we do not have something, it is because we choose not to have it. In this, we are free because nothing belongs to us. Our poverty means that we do not have the kind of shoes we may want or the house we may want. We cannot keep things or give anything away or lend anything of value. We have nothing. We own nothing. This is the experience of poverty."

"But in the West you have another kind of poverty, spiritual poverty. This is far worse. People do not believe in God, do not pray. People do not care for each other. You have the poverty of people who are dissatisfied with what they have, who do not know how to suffer, who give in to despair. This poverty of heart is often more difficult to relieve and to defeat."

infinitesimally small

One of my favorite things about God is to realize how so BIG He is and how so infinitesimally small we are in comparison to Him and His creation. This great God - who created what scientists call the "known universe", and which we know is probably just the tip of the iceberg of His whole creation - this God is the one who not only is aware of my existence, but also longs for relationship with me. It puts into fresh perspective just what God was giving up when the Bible says He became "nothing" and took on the very nature of a servant (He became human).

If you've got about 6 minutes, read this passage afresh and worship the Lord with me as you watch this video showing scientist's attempts to find & understand the borders of God's creation.

Philippians 2:5-11

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Christmas Eve at EGC

As I was driving to the office this morning I passed the EGC billboards advertising our upcoming Christmas Eve Production and activities (just a few days away now). I was reminiscing back to last year's production of "Lighting Henry's House". Wow - that was so cool! Of course, my attention turned next to what Derek Levendusky and I have been living, eating, and breathing now - this year's special service.

I think you'll like it! Sneak peak . . . we will be telling an aspect of the story of Christ's birth which you almost NEVER hear about; and you'll get to meet "teen" Jesus for a little while too! OK. I better be quiet about the rest! Suffice it to say, we're going to have a great time and I trust you will be encouraged on the eve of the birth of our Lord.

Jars of Clay

I was reading 1 Corinthians 4 last night. As I was reading it I had a mind-picture of an old clay pot sitting in the upper corner of my garage, surrounded by other stuff I will probably rarely or never use. Inside the clay pot were a large pile of diamonds and rare jewels; each worth more than what I earn in a year.

In that passage, Paul says, "we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us." God's love and grace and mercy have been made available to us, free of charge, cleansing us from all our failures, mistakes, and selfish acts. Yet often I wonder if we forget or get comfortable with His work in our lives, and as a result spend our days living as if nothing had ever happened.

Like the clay pot sitting in my garage, we hold inside of us the great riches of His love as well as His purposes and power. I don't think something that amazing was ever meant to be kept inside and forgotten. In fact, if we do forget, then I suspect we may just fall into a trap - thinking that we have "made it" on our own, rather than by God's grace.

Later on in that chapter, Paul says, "It is written: 'I believed; therefore I have spoken.' With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak..."

Let's make sure we don't keep the amazing love of Christ hidden and forgotten this week!

I hope I can be there to see Matthew 25:34-40 (mouse-over to read) come to life.

My wife and I have recently been discussing the importance of giving to those in need - and how we can do so more. It has been very stretching and challenging for me to be forced to get out of myself and into the needs of others more. The Bible is very clear that this is part of our calling and commission as believers. To reach out to the poor and needy all around us. And I think the world is starting to notice that some Christians have figured this out.

One of the most prominent proponents of choosing to live below our means in order to touch others' lives is Pastor Rick Warren. My wife just watched an interview with Pastor Rick on "Meet the Press" just yesterday. Check out this short snippet of that interview.

Just Stop and Think

This clip from Pastor Francis Chan is a great video to watch whether you are curious about Christ or already a Christ follower. It's a great reminder of God's great love for us and the potential we have for relationship with Him. FYI - it's about 15 minutes, but inspiring and worth watching! Giving Explained by a Child

Leave it to a child to communicate so simply a great strategy in life for how we manage our money. This clip is of Pastor Steven Furtick's son talking about how he likes to split up his money for God, for himself, and for savings. If only us adults could grab hold of this simple plan, I suspect we would find no need for that plastic card that constantly offers false promises of prosperity. Enjoy.

Excellence: An Inside Job

I recently read Pastor Steven Furtick's blog titled, "Excellence: An Inside Job". He was reminding us that excellence isn't just excellent when we do things well so people can see. Excellence requires a commitment to doing things as best we can, even when no one else is looking. It's an "inside job", because it should come from a value we hold inside of us that everything we do should be for the Lord, nor for man. Pastor Steven used the example of the Ark of the Covenant - God wanted it covered in gold, not just on the outside, where everyone will see, but on the inside as well.

This is how God wants us to live for Him; from the inside-out. Colossians 3:17 reminds us that, "Whatever we do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father through Him."

Challenge: I'd like to challenge you this week to do something, when no one is looking, for God with the same excellence you would give at your job, on an exam, or in your sport activities. In fact, I wonder if you can give it even more effort and energy than you would give to those things. Make sure no one will ever know what you did, or why. As you do it, give it to the Lord as an act of worship and thanksgiving to God.

What is eaten in one week around the world?

Most of us know intellectually that American's eat a lot; and of course there are other countries who have similar wealth and resources to enjoy a wide variety and high volumes of food. Last year a friend showed me this illustration created by professional photographer, Pete Menzel. In this illustration, Pete took photographs of various families around the world showing exactly what foods and how much food was consumed by that family throughout that week.

Check it out. You'll be amazed. This would be a great opportunity to remember and pray for families in other regions of the world who are obviously limited and challenged in their food options.

The World of 100

I found this amazing illustration the other day depicting what the world would look like if the whole population were 100 people (as opposed to 6.7 billion). This study is an attempt to bring clarity to our thinking by keeping the proportions identical.

I love that quote - especially the last three words, "swimming in God". How great it is to be reminded that He is with us, and attentive to us, at all times.

The Psalmist says, "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your Presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day for darkness is as light to you." Psalm 139:7-12

Putting the Word of God in context...

Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40

I think often we are guilty of reading the Bible out of context. We don't do it on purpose, we just don't think to read it in context on purpose either. According to Jesus' words in Matthew, everything you read in the Bible "hangs" on the two commands to love God and love others. I read that to mean that everything that the Bible has to say to us about life has to do with one of those two things; they are the 'context' or 'filter' by which we read the Scriptures.

I'd like you to try an experiment with me, try reading some of your favorite passages this week and ask yourself the question, "How does what I am reading fit into the greatest commandments in the Bible?" I think you may be surprised.

Recently I heard a quote about unforgiveness that struck me as very powerful, and true. I'd like to share it with you. Perhaps, like me, you will find this a great motivator to root out bitterness, anger, and unforgiveness towards others. Unfortunately, I don't know where I heard it from, so I'm not able to give credit where it's due. Sorry!

"Unforgiveness is letting other people live inside you, rent free."

No one wants to be controlled by others. God has already set us free from any and every bondage that this world and satan has to offer us. Why would I give up my freedom to be enslaved again because of something someone else has done to me? Why would I allow someone else to live inside my mind, stealing energy, life, peace, joy, and even love; when those are the things God has in fact called me to GIVE to others.

How about you? Is there someone who lives inside you, rent free? Why don't you take up the freedom Christ has paid for you and kick them out.

It's what Jesus did. He forgave each and every one of us, despite what we did to Him.

And it's what He wants us to do: "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." Matt. 6:14-15. It's no wonder...how can we receive His free gift, when we remain bound to others in unforgiveness?

The Battle Is The Lords, And He Is On Your Side

If you haven't caught Toby C's message this past week, catch it. Toby did a superb job of reminding us all that we are not alone in our daily challenges in life. He told us he believed David would say, "The battle is the Lord's and he is on your side!"

It stuck in our (my wife and I) heads and we've found ourselves repeating that truth several times to one another. We got hit with an unexpected expense yesterday, our response? The battle is the Lord's, and He is on our side!" We had a couple "parenting" challenges, by God's grace we caught ourself saying it again. The battle is the Lord's, and He is on our side!" This morning I heard Seth quote it to me with a situation he was facing.

Isn't it good to know that God is as interested (probably more) in the details of our daily lives as we? It really takes the pressure off of trying to figure out life all by ourself. I was reminded of this today as I read again Matthew 6:25-34 and Matthew 11:28-30. If you mouse over those passages in this post, you should be able to read them today as well.

Hope in the midst of Crisis

The first bible verse I ever memorized was not John 3:16. I suppose if I had grown up in the church that would have been near the top of the list. I gave my heart to God at the age of 15 and at that time my life was in an upheaval. I didn't feel I had any friend or family member who truly understood or even cared about me. I felt unwanted, and like a failure. It was in this state of mind that I turned to James 1:2-4. I was fascinated by the conflict of interest presented there; I was supposed to have "pure joy" in the midst of crisis! That just blew my mind!

I began to glimpse then, and understand a little more today that "pure joy" was not meant to be interpreted as "happy and carefree", "Yeah! Life is miserable!", Rather, it is supposed to reflect a deeper understanding that when our faith is in God, He interacts with our character, faith, and future while we are going through those rough times. Look more closely with me at these verses:

verse 3: "because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance."

OK - so I see here that this trial is testing my faith - and that it is also building something in me that I didn't have before: perseverance. The ability and courage to endure when life turns sour.

verse 4: "Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

Wow - so God is not only building something in me that I didn't have before, but that "something - namely perseverance" is a necessary ingredient for my eventual maturity. Even more shocking is the enticing possibilty of "not lacking anything".

Just looking at verse 4 alone I'm a lot more inclined to view the challenges I face with more grace. God wants to use this to mature me - to make me somehow wiser, stronger, and ultimately more like Him. I can't help but ask myself, would I rather have no trials and be extremely immature as a person, or the opposite. Personally, I don't need to think on that one too long.

verse 12: "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."

So if maturity isn't a good motivation for enduring trials, this one certainly helps bring even more perspective. A 'crown of life' just sounds so 'alive' to me. Again, I can't help but wonder what NOT having that particular promise or reward might be like.

What are you facing today? Job loss? Relational challenges? Sin? Financial strain? Health issues? You don't need to like or enjoy your trial - but you can choose to consider it a joy to know that God IS at work in your character, in your faith, and in your future through it. He IS weaving courage, perseverance, maturity, and many other blessings into your life and future. So take heart, and don't give up!

It's amazing how much we can see of our Lord in each other when we stop to look. I'm a firm believer that there's a unique piece of the wonder and majesty of God in each one of us, waiting to be noticed and recognized.

My oldest son just turned 8 years old - and I couldn't be prouder of the young man and leader he is becoming. In Benjamin, I see our Lord's great heart to bless and give to others. Yesterday we went to Chuck-E-Cheese for some family fun and entertainment. When Benjamin got to the door they handed him two extra "coins" because it was his birthday. Within a minute of receiving them, Ben offered one to Amelia, who had not been awarded her Chuck-E-Cheese allotment yet. I could see that the act was done almost without forethought. He saw her hands were empty and it just didn't seem right.

Isn't that how God is with us? He saw our desperate need for forgiveness, so He gave His Son as a gift of love to cover all our wrongdoing (John 3:16). He ascertained that we would be lost without a guide, so He sent His Holy Spirit to strengthen, convict, and lead us (John 14:26). He recognized how hard-headed we would be in life, so He gave us the Bible to remind us of His words as well as of the great deeds and mistakes of His people (Hebrews 11).

Benjamin - thanks for allowing your life to reflect Christ's. You're awesome! You are a great gift to our family! Happy Birthday!

Filled to Overflowing

I'm not sure if I heard this from Bill Johnson a couple of weeks ago or from Dr. Mike Brown this past week, but I remember one (or both) of them talking about our expectations in regards to the blessings of God in our lives. It struck me as so simple and profound to remember that we humans feel more comfortable with things being partially filled, almost full, or just plain full; whereas God's design is for us to experience blessings OVERflowing in our life regularly. None of us would choose to OVER fill a cup of coffee until it spills out, nor would we fill a bowl of Cheerios to the very top until it was pouring off the edges. There seems to be no point. It just makes a mess and the leftovers that spill out get thrown away.

Of course, it seems that we take this natural example in life and apply it to our lives spiritually as well. We often pray that God would bless us to a certain point. We tend to be content with our lives partially full or maybe even full. Our soul-containers feel comfortable with that.

But it seems that God's hope is to actually bless our lives so abundantly that there is an OVERFLOW of that blessing. Unlike the examples above, whenever we have an overflow of joy, love, finances, power, peace, etc. everyone around us benefits and ends up receiving from the Lord through us.

Bill Johnson says in his book, Face to Face With God, "A glass of water is not really full until it overflows. Similarly, the fullness of the Spirit in our lives is measured by the overflow of the Spirit through us in order to touch the world around us."

What are you asking, expecting, and believing God for in your life? Let's believe together for an over-abundance of His blessings!

Having a bad day?

Hebrews 12:1-3 says, among other things, "...let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

I was thinking on that Scripture today and was struck by the comparison the writer makes (intentionally or not) between our need to persevere and endure and Christ doing so. We are exhorted to persevere and keep running forward in Christ. I'm pretty sure we wouldn't feel the need to persevere if life weren't sometimes overwhelming, challenging, and just plain "hard". But we're called to not give up, to keep moving forward, to endure.

And fixing our eyes on Christ, who did so for us (endured) and even considered it a joy - that is, He looked beyond the momentary pain and suffering inflicted on Him to the goal. Of course, we know that goal was rooted in a perfect love for you and me; to see us restored in relationship to God and forgiven of all our wrongdoings.

Are you having a bad day, week, or maybe even year? Look to Christ. Consider His bad day and don't allow yourself to grow weary and lose heart. He's sitting there right now ready to listen and speak to you. He knows what it's like - and He believes in you.

Attitude...

Teaching my kids the wonders of God

I am admittedly inadequate in my effort to teach my kids all they need to know about God. I know I'm not a stranger to this challenge - many father's face it with me. I simply pray that I will continue to build habits and behaviors in my life that will give my kids the tools, experiences, and knowledge they need to be successful in life, and to discover meaningful relationship with God.

A few weeks ago I came across a Scripture that has helped me in this effort. I read it, and felt convicted to make a change in my daily interactions with my two older children. It's found in Psalm 78:1-8. There is a lot of stuff in here that is relevant to us parents, but let me point you to one verse in particular: Psalm 78:4 (simply mouse over the verse to read it).

When I read that, all of a sudden I realized I have a responsibility to tell my kids stories about "God's great deeds, his power, and the wonders he has done." So for the past several weeks I have tried very hard to tell not only Bible stories, but "God-Stories" I have read about, experienced, or know of that have happened in this day and age.

It has made a difference. Besides the fact that I am reminded almost daily myself of God's mighty works, my kids look forward to that time (bedtime) every day too.

The Law of Love

I'm so amazed how simple Christ made the christian walk. Well, I guess I'm saying that sort of tongue in cheek. It's simple to understand (though many believers make it complex), but we all will spend our lives learning how to walk it out.

Jesus made it so clear . . . love God and love others. In fact, he said that every rule or principle or standard or law that you might read in the Bible finds it's root in one of those commands (Gal. 5:14).

Paul clarified this by reminding us that everything we need to do in life should find it's root in love. When I was a teen I entered a contest (the prize was a bike) with my youth group to memorize 1 Corinthians chapter 13. I got the passage, but not the bike. I've never regretted it. Let's be reminded again of the greatest calling God has given us . . . to love.

Today is my daughter's (and oldest child's) birthday. She's hitting double digits! Watching her get up this morning (at 5AM) so excited about the day's activities and seeing her giddy, pent up energy has been so fun to watch. Benjamin, my 7 year old son, has been the mirror image of her too. They've got the whole day planned out - and of course the minutes seem to tick by twice as slow when you're waiting for a party. As I left this morning I heard Benjamin say to Amelia, "Let's play the computer for a while, that'll help us pass the time until the party." It made me smile.

We never thought we'd have FOUR children. But now that we do, we can truly say that we are very, very blessed. Becky and I love Amelia, Benjamin, Derek, and Eliot so much it hurts. What a great blessing and responsibility God has given us!

So today I just want to publicly thank God for His great gift of these children - and I specifically thank Him for my little girl, who is growing up so fast. I pray she finds this day and year to be the best yet for her and that she continues to grow in her love for our great God.

Praise God for Yourself!

Ha. How about that for a blog title. Sounds selfish, and self-centered! I praise You God for me! Yet look at this passage in Psalm 139:

¹³ For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. ¹⁴ I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, ¹⁶ your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

This past week my wife and I had the great joy of welcoming our fourth child into the world. Eliot was born March 26th at 12:43AM. He is amazing and beautiful! His skin is soft and tender. His eyes, mouth, ears, nose, seem perfectly formed. We see a little of our other kids and ourselves in him. But we see ALL of Eliot. He is a beautiful creation - and we praise God for him!

How ironic that we are so quick to praise God for a little child, but so slow to praise Him for who we are. When we look in the mirror we often don't thank God, we cringe. Yet despite our flaws, imperfections, and sin, God saw them in advance and still created us. More than that, He still found us worthy of the ultimate sacrifice. He loved us enough to die for us so we can be with Him forever.

Thank God today for the gift of life. Not someone elses. Yours. He created you special too. He created you with a holy plan. I dare you to take a moment right now and pray the prayer David prayed above. If you like, you can browse to the whole chapter and read it as an act of worship and adoration to God today.

The Value of "Fellowship"

A couple of years ago I spent some time reading about this thing we call "fellowship". I am still so amazed at what the Bible says are benefits of meaningful connections with others. Here are some passages to show you what I mean:

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Hebrews 10:23-25

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Eccl. 4:9-12

“Iron sharpens iron; so one man sharpens another.” Prov. 27:17

“But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Heb. 3:13

“For where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am there in their midst.” Matt. 18:20

If you add up some of the benefits shown above here’s what happens while pursuing meaningful connections with others:

I am motivated to love others (Heb. 10:24)
I am motivated to do good deeds for others (Heb. 10:24)
I am encouraged (Heb. 10:25; Heb. 3:13))
I will accomplish more (Eccl. 4:9)
If I fall down (or am hurting, discouraged, down, in difficulty) I will have help. (Eccl. 4:10)
I will find companionship (Eccl. 4:11)
I will be able to withstand my enemies & defend myself against their schemes. (Eccl. 4:12)
I will grow to be a useful instrument (Prov. 27:17)
I will be protected from being overtaken in sin. (Heb. 3:13)
God’s Presence will be manifest and available to me. (Matt. 18:20)

It strikes me so strongly after seeing this that it is absolutely imperative that we stay in regular contact with other believers. That doesn’t mean it’s always easy (iron sharpening iron doesn’t sound fun). And it doesn’t mean it happens perfectly. But the more we expose ourselves to other believers, the more possible it is for us to reap the fruit of the above benefits.

I want to strongly exhort you to make attending Sunday Services, weekly classes/groups, and intentional ongoing connections with others a priority – even when they sometimes don’t seem to add much to your life. It's the consistent rubbing shoulders with others that will stimulate spiritual growth in our lives in the long run.

What happens to people who have never heard of Jesus? Part 2

In my last blog I began the process of looking into the question, "What happens to people who have never heard of Jesus?" If you haven't read that excerpt, you may want to do so before reading part 2 below!

I'm so thankful that the responsibility to explain God, His motivations, His actions, and His plans doesn't really fall on my shoulders. The best I can do is shed some light on some ideas and principles we can see from Scripture (many of which I posted earlier this week in Part 1 of this discussion). Based on some of my own reading on this topic, it seems that the following thoughts are at least in part to be considered when addressing this question:

God is righteous and just in all He does - in the end we will affirm the righteousness of His judgements*. Psalm 116:5.
People are not condemned for rejecting a message they never heard - lack of knowledge of Jesus is not the reason people end up condemned*. Eph. 2:1-2
People are responsible for the light they have received - and at a minimum everyone has knowledge of God gained through creation and conscience*. Psalm 19:1-4, Romans 1:20
No one will be in heaven merely because he or she has been sincere and lived a good life - for no one has*. Eph. 2:8-9, Titus 3:5
The only reason why people will be in heaven is because of grace personally received, and the only basis for forgiveness clearly outlined in the Bible is Jesus Christ paying the price for each one's sin through his death on the cross*. John 1:12, Acts 4:12, Romans 3:22-24, Romans 5:6-8

So we know God is Just. We know that He will judge man based on their knowledge of Him as well as their understanding/interest in seeking His face. And we know that just being a sincere and good person by the worlds standards is not enough.

I read a story told by Ravi Zachariah about a convert to Christianity who heard about Jesus in a dream. Zachariah summarized that story by saying, "I believe that if a person genuinely and sincerely seeks after him, there will be some way God makes available for that person to hear of him. If that person would not have responded to God under any circumstance, then perhaps he will not hear of him. But all people know enough to condemn them; they do not need to hear John 3:16 in order to be lost. They are lost because they've already rejected what God has spoken to them through creation, their conscience, and other ways. Because of that, we will all stand accountable before him.**"

Clearly the issue is difficult to fully grasp. I think that's because God has no desire to be boxed up and figured out. He created a universe so vast that man is destined to forever be in awe of Him. A God so far beyond human comprehension shouldn't have to submit to man's feeble attempts at creating rules and regulations on what He should do and how He should act. It's enough that He is a Good God, a Just God, a Righteous God, and most importantly a Loving God.

What this means for you and I is:

We need to accept His free God-sized plan to bridge the great chasm between us and Him. Jesus Christ gave His life as payment for our failure to measure up to a holy God. There's no good reason not to accept a gift that is truly free. Those who don't have misunderstood this plan - and probably believe there are strings attached to the forgiveness available. There aren't.
We need to unashamedly tell others about the great news of Jesus Christ. News this good is not meant to be kept private, exclusive and hidden. It's meant to be enthusiastically shared to our neighbors, our families and the whole world. Thankfully, our responsibility lies in simply spreading God's grace, not in manufacturing a response from those who hear. The Scripture actually indicates that there are way more people ready to hear than there are those telling them the news (Matthew 9:37). So tell someone about God's gift this week. What happens to people who have never heard of Jesus? Part 1

Oh no! What have I done? I told everyone on church Sunday that I would attempt a discussion on the God Question, "What happens to people who have never heard of Jesus?" This has got to be one of the most difficult questions to attempt at answering! Now would be a great time for the internet to crash or something . . . . . . . . . oh well, let's see what happens!

If you are a seeker, and on a search to discover who God is, and what He's all about I'd like to encourage you to first watch or listen to my discussion on "Do all roads lead to God?" In that message I spend time explaining a very basic, but important foundation to the Christian faith. It'd be great for you to hear that as a foundation for this discussion.

To get started, I'd like to place some Scriptures on the table for us to look at. Take some time today and perhaps tomorrow studying and seeking counsel from these passages. What do you notice about them regarding those who have never heard? How do you think they apply to the question we are asking this week? A Prayer Psalm

Since we're focusing in on prayer this month I thought I'd share a "prayer psalm" I read the other day. I see at least 10 requests David makes of God. Why don't you take a moment right now and pray this same prayer to God? Change the word "you" to the word "me".

Slowing Down

Philippians 4 reminds us: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil 4:6-7

Isn't it great to know that God is interested in listening to our prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings? Even more, that His desire is to give us supernatural peace and to guard our hearts and our minds? Wow.

When I shared in church a couple weeks ago I mentioned that I planned to take the next month to journal each morning. I thought I'd treat it as an experiment, to see if it really does work in "slowing me down". Well, I'm more than 10 days into this new journey and so far I'm pleased with the results. By choosing to write out a few sentences about my previous day (rather than typing my thoughts out on my computer) I'm forced to slow down and reflect. It takes a while for me to cursive/print out my thoughts - which I'm finding is at least partially the point.

Wrestling with God Questions

This month we are beginning a great series called "The God Questions". I'm really looking forward to it . . . for two reasons.

First and foremost, I hope and pray those who are searching or curious about God will come and find encouragement as well as helpful insights into their very real and important questions about God. Simply put, none of us will come to an understanding of God and His acceptance of us until we've experienced greater revelation of who He is personally.

I know for me it was a question that brought me to the place of realizing how much I needed God. The question that I was asking had everything to do with how God viewed me and if I was good enough to be one of His own. When I knelt by my bedside on July 8, 1984 in the middle of the night and prayed simply, "God, please forgive me, I want to be a Christian," everything changed. That night became a pivotal moment in my life which I'll never forget. And it all began with a question.

I like to encourage people to ask their questions about God. There's no reason not to. The Bible is chock full of people who didn't understand God and constantly wrestled with who He is and what He's all about. Many people in the Bible struggled with this, including Moses, Job, Jeremiah, David, Solomon, Thomas and Saul (who later became Paul).

If you're questioning God today, especially if you are questioning who He is and what He thinks of man, I have a suggestion for you. Browse to THIS LINK and watch the message entitled "Indescribable" by Lou Giglio. We actually showed this in church a couple of years ago. I know you'll find it interesting and challenging.

The second reason I'm looking forward to this series is simply because all of us, whether we are believers or not, need to be reminded of the questions people ask and how we might respond. We need to learn more about what it is we believe. This series will be an excellent opportunity for us to sharpen our knowledge of the Word, of God and of our faith.
